Talk to your child and speak openly about your feelings, thoughts, and concerns. Keep the door open to talk about this anytime with your child.

Help your child get closer to God – encourage daily prayer, going to Mass, and other meaningful devotions.
Support or participate with your child in a service project, such as volunteering to teach a religion class, visit the sick, or join a social project such as Habitat for Humanity.
Find a friend, priest, spiritual director, or school counselor who can help your child decide among the many good vocations in our world.
If your son has indicated an interest in the Marists, become familiar with our website, call our vocation director to ask your own questions or find out if there is a Marist in your area with whom you can meet.

Discernment: For Parents

Putting it all together

If your child has talked about becoming a priest or a brother, you probably have a lot of questions. If your child is under age 21, you might be wondering if this is rebellion or a phase. How do you know if this is a real call? And, how do you help your child in a supportive discernment process?

We Marists see our vocation as a serious, joyful, and fulfilling commitment to love and serve God in the spirit of Mary. Mary’s faithful and humble spirit is one that responds to God saying, "Let it be done to me according to your Word." We are sustained by prayer and by sharing our lives with fellow Marist priests and brothers and the broader Marist family including sisters and laity.

We are an apostolic community, which lives out its commitment within the world – in schools, parishes, and other agencies within the Church and society. Our ministries all serve to further the works of Mercy in our world.

Because our founder saw all vocations as bettering society – lay people, priests, brothers, and sisters together – we do not see our way of life as better than any other.

We do believe that God does call men and women to a consecrated life to work together for a particular mission. If such a call is the case with your son, we would be happy to talk with him and with yourselves about the way that Marists live and serve God in our world.
